Sunrise Pattern over Water
encaustic, 30"x30"
October 2012
As the title implies, the genesis of this piece was the shimmer of the rising sun on water. Specifically, the sunrise over the Black Sea, captured in a short video by my father. The constant movement and sparkle of the sea is mesmerizing, but I quickly realized that what really interested me was the ever-shifting pattern. And so, an instant of pattern, simplified and shifted away from its silvery sparkle, to be more clearly pattern. I left a fragment of horizon line as a tie back to the sea.
