I am privileged to be selected for this year's Heaven and Earth show—a temporary outdoor art exhibition, orchestrated by CoCA, Seattle Parks and Recreation, and the Carkeek Park Advisory Council.
I will be constructing a sound sculpture which will be situated in Carkeek Park, on a bluff overlooking Puget Sound. I will make a series of wooden boxes, open on two sides, perched on a tree-like structure so as to catch the breeze. Inside they will house aluminum roofing nails suspended from thread. The inspiration behind the piece is the bright silvery sound made by the nails when they strike one another lightly.
I will also be relearning how to use a variety of power tools for this project. It couldn't get better!

After completing Above I felt a push to a quieter, more contemplative mode of working.
I love the translucency of encaustic, it's an attribute the medium shares with watercolor, and one that requires precise control of pigments to achieve. The piece I have in mind will need a very steady hand, minute changes in color mixing, and minimal shift of form. To help, I made a full-scale watercolor drawing (40"x50") to serve as a map for the 20 panel encaustic piece.
I will begin work on the encaustic painting in the latter part of July.
