SoundScape

encaustic and graphite, 92"x24"

May 2013

SoundScape is a reversal of process. Instead of editing down until I found the bare minimum of visual elements needed to carry through an idea, in building this piece, I took an additive approach. I started with a concept of density of elements dissipating and the heavy sound-wave shape, and each successive piece went down in response to what was already on panel. The piece is a collection of ideas about sound—the structure, the rhythm, unexpected breaks and voids, and changes in texture. SoundScape marks a significant shift and expansion in my work process.
